Part-Time Position

JOB TITLE:                                        Adult School Crossing Guard

SALARY:                                           $14.78 – $29.58

DEPARTMENT:                                 Police Department

JOB DESCRIPTION:

• Crossing Guard is responsible for regulating traffic in order to safely cross school children from one side of the street to the other during designated hours. 
• Perform such other related duties as may be required.

JOB HOURS & LOCATIONS:

• All work is performed outdoors regardless of weather. 
• Job sites can be anywhere throughout the Township.
• Crossing guards will be at designated locations and at regularly specified times.
• An example of post times are:

8:45- 9:15 am & 3:20-3:50 pm;

7:45-8:15 am & 3:25-3:55 pm;

7:00-7:30 am & 2:50-3:20 pm. 

• Times are subject to change on early release days.
• Times vary according to school.

EQUIPMENT USED:

All adult school crossing guards shall be issued a uniform that shall be worn during working hours. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Good physical condition, including sight, hearing, and ability to move and maneuver quickly in order to avoid danger from errant vehicles;
  • Ability to control a STOP paddle effectively to provide approaching road users with a clear, fully direct view of the paddle’s STOP message during the entire crossing movement;
  • Ability to communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously;
  • Ability to recognize potentially dangerous traffic situations and warn and manage students in sufficient time to avoid injury.
  • Mental alertness; Neat appearance; Good character;
  • Dependability; and an overall sense of responsibility for the safety of students.
• Must be minimum of 18 years old; possess a high school diploma (or GED).
• Must possess valid N.J. Driver’s License with a good driving record.
• Background checks will be conducted on all prospective applicants.
• Must successfully pass a thorough criminal history and background check.
• Must successfully pass 2 hours of classroom training and 20 hours on the job training.
• Must successfully pass a six month probation period.
